Advanced Class Opportunities

7th Grade Honors Opportunities:

Honors Language Arts 7- is a class for students who enjoy reading fiction, non-fiction, and poetry and/or enjoy writing in all forms (narrative, expository, argument, poetry).  The curriculum is based on the 7th grade CDE state standards, but allows for students to read more challenging and diverse text, and continue to hone their writing skills in a more rigorous academic setting.

Students will be expected to read higher level novels and other text and commit some additional time to their work outside of the classroom.  Honors is denoted on the transcript as well.

Pre-Algebra: This class is for students who are ready to move at a faster pace in 7th grade math.  The curriculum includes standards from both 7th and 8th grade math and is designed for students who are ready for a challenging and rigorous classroom where they will work hard to be prepared for 9th grade Algebra in 8th grade.  The goal of the class is to accelerate and build upon their math skills in order to cover two years of math standards in one year.

8th Grade Honors Opportunities:

8th Grade Honors Language Arts- is for students who already enjoy language arts but would like more of a challenge.  We follow the same curriculum as other 8th grade students however honors language arts gives us a chance to dig deeper.  We work on lots choice projects, group activities, in depth novel work and students have lots of opportunity for creative writing.  Students in honors language arts enjoy being with students who are interested in having their thoughts and voices heard through class and small group discussions.

Algebra- This class is for students who have completed Pre-Algebra in 7th grade.  These students will be taking the 9th grade Algebra I class as 8th grade students.  This gives them the opportunity to start high school one year ahead in math and to take more challenging math classes before they graduate (perhaps even earning college credit while still in high school). Algebra 1 is an introduction to abstract reasoning and algebraic symbolism. Students will solve equations and systems of equations, and they will use functions to represent patterns and make predictions. The focus is on linear, exponential, and quadratic functions. Students will also employ algebraic methods to summarize data and to compare data sets.

Honors Social Studies 8- Honors 8th grade Social Studies class as containing more collaboration, project based instruction with thematic novels tied into our units. This class will go at a faster pace and involved more outside reading to come to class prepared to discuss the topics at hand. There will be a current events discussion daily in addition to American History and Geography.
